Part of the sample for IHDS was drawn from an earlier 1993-94 survey, known as Human Development Profile of India (HDPI), conducted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). HDPI only collected data in rural areas. Therefore, a new sample was drawn for urban areas for IHDS. The urban sample was based on the 2001 Indian Census list of all Indian towns and cities. The first round of IHDS (IHDS-I) covered over 41,000 households across India, in 1503 villages and 971 urban neighborhoods across India. The second round of IHDS (IHDS-II) was collected from 42,152 households in 1,420 villages and 1,042 urban neighborhoods across India with an 85% reinterview rate of continuing families. The third round of IHDS (IHDS-III) was collected from over 46,000 households across 32 states and union territories of India.
